 High
Meadows Summer Day Camp staff is made up of mainly college students,
teachers, and parents of campers. Many campers return to High
Meadows as staff members after completing our Counselor-in-Training
program. New staff members usually work as group counselors alongside
veteran High Meadows counselors, or, depending on certification
and experience, may work as instructors in a specific activity
area. Starting pay for college students is $275 per week, increasing
with experience and responsibility. Bonuses are paid to staff
members who ride or drive buses as counselors. Discounts are
also provided to staff members whose children attend camp.
High Meadows will offer three sessions of camp in 2008: June 2 – 20, June 23 – July 11, and July 14 – August 1. New staff members are expected
to work the entire summer, but we may also consider applicants whose schedules
only permit them to work one or two sessions.
Staff members are required to be at camp daily from 8:30 to 4:30, and to help
prepare camp the Sunday prior to each session. Staff members are also required to attend the pre-camp training sessions.

REFERENCE FORM INSTRUCTIONS:
Distribute reference forms to four people you feel are qualified
to comment on your character, ability, and work habits. Ideal candidates
include past employers and teachers. You may also use adult acquaintances
who know you well personally. Fill out the top portion of each
form, signing your name in the shaded box with the understanding
that all information received will be kept strictly confidential.
Write the name, address, and phone number of each person you use
as a reference on the last page of the application so that we may
contact them if we have any further questions. Please have these
forms returned to High Meadows as soon as possible. Upon receipt
of these references, we will continue to consider your application
and contact you with further information.
DESCRIPTIONS OF JOBS AVAILABLE:
GROUP COUNSELOR
Qualifications: Minimum age of 18 years. (unless graduated from CIT program)
Desire to work with children with emphasis on environment and outdoor
skills.
At least one year experience as a camper, Jr. Counselor, or counselor.
Experience in group leadership.
Good character, integrity, and adaptability; prudence in judgement, sensitivity
to and understanding of children.
A group counselor is responsible for the direct supervision and instruction
of a group of approximately 12-15 campers, planning daily activities, and actively
participating in and encouraging a rewarding camp experience.
A counselor must possess the ability to communicate and work with campers,
to observe camp behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations
and emergency procedures, and to apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
He/she must have the visual, auditory, and ambulatory ability to respond to
environmental and other hazards related to the activities.
UNIT LEADER
Qualifications: Minimum age of 21 years.
2-3 years of college or related work experience.
Ability and experience in supervisory and administrative skills.
Excellent leadership and communication skills.
High personal standards, dedication to detail, and maturity.
Each age division in camp is headed by a Unit Leader. Unit leaders are a counselor’s
primary resource for information, direction, and help in working with campers.
It is the unit leader’s responsibility to ensure the safety and efficacy
of the camp program and the proper carrying out of duties by counselors. He/she
will be in charge of specific programming and for approving the duties of a
counselor as necessary. He/she will be in continual communication with the
Camp Director in regards to the functioning of the unit. Unit Leaders fulfill
public relations duties in keeping parents informed of camp activities and
incidents and in handling parental questions and concerns.
Unit leaders must continually monitor camper/staff activity, ensure positive
morale, and submit to program staff various written reports as requested. They
are required to help plan and execute special events and all camp programs.
They are also responsible, in part, for staff training, and instruction during
pre-camp and throughout the summer.
SPECIALIST
Qualifications: Minimum age of 18 years.
Certification, training, and/or extensive experience in the appropriate skills.
Knowledge of history and application of skill.
At least two seasons of camping or related work experience.
Experience teaching children or in a leadership position.
Dedication to principles of environmental concern and respect for American
traditions.
Genuine interest in children and in skill; flexibility in acceptance of diverse
duties; responsibility in carrying out program.
Specialists make use of the facilities and natural environment of camp to present
to campers various skills and knowledge that are useful, interesting and applicable
to their camping experience. Specialists include instructors in the following
areas: Pioneering, Native American Lore, Archery, Arts and Crafts, Nature,
Canoeing, Ropes, Swimming, Photography, Woodworking, Performing Arts, Animal
Care, and Sports. Daily classes are pre-scheduled so that each group has an
opportunity to experience each specialist area.
Specialist duties do not end with scheduled classes. It is their responsibility
to encourage campers to take interest in and practice skills and must promote
this by supplying aid and/or materials to counselors for use at times other
than their scheduled period. Specialists aid program staff in the planning,
set-up, and execution of all camp events. They are responsible for the care
and maintenance of their specific work area and all materials that are entrusted
to them.

CAMP NURSE
Qualifications:
Registered nurse, licensed in the State of Georgia.
Experience in pediatrics, working with children, or in a camp setting.
Current CPR and First Aid certificates.
