High Meadows recognizes the value of a camp experience for all children, and the importance of diversity, respect, and interaction with persons of different abilities.
We have established a relationship with Heart of Hope Academy, an accredited non-profit private program located in Northeast Atlanta which provides educational and experiential opportunities for children with autism and developmental delays.
Students from Heart of Hope participate in all three sessions of our Day Camp program. Staff from Heart of Hope Academy are present with their students at all times, maintaining a 2:1 camper-to-staff ratio, providing appropriate attention to their needs, and facilitating positive social interactions.
High Meadows campers are encouraged to interact with the students to the degree that they are comfortable, fostering an inclusive atmosphere of caring and respect. Campers are also oriented to the special needs of the students they will encounter, as appropriate to their age level, and are encouraged to ask questions and to be welcoming of the opportunity to share camp.
We have also been supported by the National Inclusion Project in these efforts. The National Inclusion Project serves to bridge the gap that exists between young people with special needs and the world around them. They support communities with inclusive programs and together create awareness about the possibilities that inclusion can bring.
Parents of potential campers with special needs should contact the Camp Director prior to registration in order for us to help determine the suitability of our program and the opportunities that may exist for an enriching, safe, and mutually beneficial camp experience.
